This week, I spoke with my friend Filip Emery, who teaches spin in Silverlake, Los Angeles, and identifies as a Swifty.
Filip’s love for Taylor Swift goes beyond recreation. It’s part of his identity, and he’ll start a Taylor convo with anyone who knows their stuff. We talk pop culture, blonde pop transformations, and family-themed tattoos.

Annie: It's Pride Month in quarantine 2.0. Right now, we've got the Delta variant. And if you want to deny it, DON'T. Filip, what is your vibe on Pride Month? 'Cause I know some people are like, no, I don't do the parades thing. I'm not that kind of a person--
Filip: (laughs enthusiastically) That hit the nail on the head for me. I hate parades. I've always hated parades. Even at Disneyland. I was like, can we go ride Splash Mountain instead? But yeah, at most parades, I'm like, it's too hot. It's just people walking by. I'm like, throw me in a club. Let's listen to Dua Lipa or like Taylor Swift.
Annie: I remember when Dua Lipa came onto the scene with her song (sings it) "I can't stop thinkin' 'bout you..."
Filip: That's not the one I know from Dua Lipa. I think her first song was "New Rules." It was like, "One (holds up index finger), don't pick up the phone. Two, um, (peace sign) you know, he's only calling because he drunk and alone. Three, don't let him in. And then there's a fourth one on that album that I don't think anyone knows. But most of the time, I think she lets him in anyway. It's I think she's like, oh, don't do any of this, but she's going to do it anyways. You're like, "Du-a!"
Annie: She understands.
Filip: Yeah.
Annie: The difficulty of being a 21st century woman who blocks someone. And then... about... Four or five months later, unblocks. And stirs the pot.
